Article : the Band music of bengal

Collectivism and application of Western principles of music are two main hall marks of Band music. Bengal always believe in fusion (and confusion !), so how it can  be left behind in this area?

Calcutta based Mohiner Ghoraguli is widely credited with being the first Bangla Band, though it did not achieve wide recognition in its time. The 1970s were not a propitious time for an experimental group like Moheener Ghoraguli. It was the heyday of traditional Bengali solo singers such as Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay, Shyamal Mitra.

Gautam Chatterjee, founder of Mohiner Ghoraguli used a wide variety of styles such as rock, pop, hard rock, heavy metal, grunge, folk, and fusion. Their music was influenced both by popular American music as well as traditional Bengali folk music. They showed the path.

The name "Mohiner Ghoraguli" was taken from a line of poet Jibonanondo Das " Moheener ghoragulo ghash khae Kartik'er jyotsna'r prantorey"

Over a period, particularly after 1990, Band Sangeet, is gaining or has gained its popularity in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. Most of the bands, in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, carry catchy imaginative names and uses all the styles possible from heavy metals to fusion.

Fossils, Cactus, Black, LRB(Love Runs Blind), Artcell, Bhoomi, Krosswindz, Warfaze, Chime, Ark, Nagar Baul, Nion, Fossils, Prithibi, Feelings etc, etc. There is even a Chennai based band called Oikkatan, promoting Bengali band music. The band Bhoomi has even performed at functions in the United Nations.

Incidentally, Mohiner Ghoraguli was resurrected in late nineties.

Here we have presented just a glimpse of the talent in store.
